The Netherlands has issued a European arrest warrant for Klaas Carel Faber, a convicted Nazi war criminal who escaped from prison nearly 60 years ago, the Telegraph reports. Faber, 88, was part of an SS unit that committed summary executions of Dutch civilians for being either Jewish or "anti-German"—that is, sympathetic to the resistance. He was sentenced to death in 1947 by a Dutch court for the murder of 22 individuals; the sentence was commuted to life in prison.

But Faber escaped to Germany in 1952, where he gained citizenship. The warrant issued today is more of a formality; it must be issued before Dutch authorities can file a formal request for extradition.
