New Jersey insists it doesn’t stink, but at least one city does—and it’s attempting to fix the problem with hundreds of gallons of air freshener. East Brunswick residents have been assaulted for years by aromas wafting from the 200-acre-plus Middlesex County Landfill, where more than 1,000 tons of trash arrive daily. In an effort to combat the not-so-pleasant fragrance, a truck now drives through the garbage releasing the citrus-scented spray, the Star-Ledger reports.
“It has a pleasant, showery smell,” says an executive. The system was modeled after a similar one in another New Jersey county, and it exists in addition to a 2007 odor-management plan that added deodorizing sprays to the fence. So far, not all residents are convinced it’s working. All one smells is “garbage,” she says. “I understand it’s there, but please. (The landfill operators) should come and sit and have a barbecue with me. Then they’ll know what it's really like.”
