McCain, Brewer Win in Arizona

John McCain has cruised to victory in Arizona, easily defeating conservative challenger JD Hayworth. The Republican now looks to set to win a fifth term in the US Senate, the AP reports. McCain looked vulnerable to anti-incumbent sentiment early in the campaign but fought back by shifting to the rights on issues including immigration and spending over $20 million on campaign ads.

Gov. Jan Brewer also won easily, defeating a pair of unknowns to win the GOP primary for governor. Brewer's popularity surged after she signed a controversial immigration law in April. She will face the state's Democratic attorney general, Terry Goddard, in the election this fall. Analysts expect the campaigns will focus on the economy instead of immigration heading into November.
