Laura on Dubya: We Depend on Each Other

Laura Bush continues the publicity blitz for new memoir Spoken From the Heart with a sit-down with Ladies Home Journal. Highlights:

• Texas meets DC: "All his Midland friends would come to the Oval Office and say, 'I can't believe I'm here.' And then they looked at him: [They] couldn't believe he was there, either."
• Personal safety: "I'm not a fearful person. But I also [engage in] a little bit of fatalistic thinking: If your number is up, it's up."
• Her relationship with Dubya: "We're very dependent on each other. You know, we just want to be with each other. That's how we feel most secure."
  

• Obama's party crashers: "It was a shock when I saw it on the news. But I also think those people were unbelievable cons."
• Technology: "George reads with a Kindle, but I don't have one yet. And I should get one, because I really could enjoy the large type. That'd be great for me."
• Political criticism: "I do think it's more extreme now. But it's always been a part of American politics. (If) you go to the Lincoln Library, and you read the pamphlets and see the political cartoons. They're vile."
