A California lawmaker wants US-born children of illegal immigrants deported, he told a Tea Party rally. "It takes more than walking across the border to become an American citizen. It's in our souls," Republican Duncan Hunter said in San Diego. Deporting American kids of illegal citizens is "not being mean," he added. "We cannot afford what we're doing right now." The 14th Amendment of the US Constitution guarantees citizenship to all people born in the US.

"It was a short answer to a complex issue," a spokesman explained later, appearing to backpedal when asked to elaborate on Hunter's statement. He said Hunter's comments, which were posted on YouTube, did not reflect his real stance on the matter. Hunter also called Arizona's new immigration law "fantastic."
