Martina Navratilova's revelation yesterday that she's battling breast cancer may be her toughest match yet. The Czech-born champ, 53, said the February diagnosis was like a "personal 9/11," reports the Times of London. “It was a total shock because I have been so healthy,” she says. "I stay in shape and eat right, and it happened to me."

Navratilova, a nine-time Wimbledon champion, defected to the US in 1975. After she was outed as a lesbian in 1981, she survived intense scrutiny from conservative America. She's gone public with her latest struggle, she says, to encourage other people to get check-ups. Her advice: "Get the bloody mammogram."
