Nobel Peace Prize Nominees Include the Internet

The internet—yes the entire technological concept—could be the next Nobel Peace Prize winner. It’s among the record 237 individuals and organizations nominated for the prize, and it has significant muscle behind it. Supporters include 2003 winner Shirin Ebadi, the Italian version of Wired magazine and Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of the $100 laptop program, the BBC reports.

There’s even a site—internetforpeace.org—advocating the candidacy as “a Nobel for each and every one of us.” What’s not clear is who would accept the award and the prize money. The full list of candidates is secret, but the short list is thought to include human rights activists Svetlana Gannushkina of Russia and Liu Xiaobo of China, among other humans.
