London Mayor Boris Johnson came to the rescue of a woman beset by a group of “feral” 12-year-old girls. “One of them had an iron bar in her hand,” the woman recalls to the Guardian. “It was as big as her.” Just then, the wild-haired London mayor—“my knight on shining bicycle”—cycled by and dispersed the gaggle of ruffians by calling them “oiks” and chasing them with their own dropped bar. He returned to walk the victim home.

The woman, an environmental activist and documentary filmmaker, admits that she did not vote for Johnson, a Conservative, opting for Labour candidate Ken Livingstone. But she offers a ringing endorsement of his personal approach to street crime. “If you find yourself down a dark alleyway and in trouble, I think Boris would be of more use than Ken.” (More Boris Johnson stories.)
