For many Republicans, Dick Cheney is like an embarrassing uncle at a family party. The former VP says unpopular, provocative things, and, reports the Hill, they just wish he would go away. By attacking President Obama in recent appearances, says one GOP lawmaker, Cheney did “House Republicans no favors.” Agrees another, “it would probably be better for us politically if he wouldn’t be so public.”

Rep. Mark Kirk, a moderate potential Senate candidate in Illinois, suggests that Cheney spend some time doing something else. “Tending a legacy is best done in a memoir.” The White House, meanwhile, is happy enough to have Cheney as a foil. “I guess Rush Limbaugh was busy,” quipped White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.
