Cloudlfare has apologized for an outage that took down big swaths of the internet on Tuesday. The internet infrastructure provider said a file didn't work as intended, triggering a crash in its software and causing a "significant outage," the BBC reports. "We apologize to our customers and the internet in general for letting you down today," the company said. The outage Tuesday morning impacted users of everything from ChatGPT and the online game League of Legends to the New Jersey Transit system, the AP reports. By Tuesday afternoon, Cloudflare said its engineers no longer saw some of the issues plaguing its customers, but that they were continuing to monitor for any further problems.

If you encountered an error calling up a website on Tuesday morning, it's likely not on your end. Much of the internet was down Tuesday morning, but internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare says it is deploying a fix. The snafu caused global outages for ChatGPT, social media platform X, transit infrastructure, and other prominent internet services, per the AP. Cloudflare said on its status page earlier Tuesday that it had identified an issue that was affecting customers.

Cloudflare is a prominent internet hub providing network and security products for internet service providers. Some cybersecurity experts have warned for years about the potentially ugly consequences of allowing a handful of big tech companies to underpin the online world's plumbing.
