The steady stream of stories emerging about John McCain's brand new running mate has some Republicans wondering how thoroughly Sarah Palin was vetted, the New York Times reports. McCain has said he was aware that her teen daughter Bristol was pregnant, although aides are vague about when he learned of it. GOP insiders say it's becoming apparent that the selection was made in haste.

McCain was holding out for Tom Ridge or Joe Lieberman as running mates until last week—but was stymied by conservative bigwigs' fury over the men's pro-choice positions, according to sources. With time running out, McCain turned to Palin, making the announcement of his pick on Friday—one day after the Republican vetting team arrived in Alaska, according to campaign insiders.
