Party's Not Over for Romney

Mitt Romney won’t share a ticket with John McCain, but the former Massachusetts governor’s political future is still rosy, the Boston Herald reports. “He’s a very viable candidate,” one expert said, whether for a Cabinet post in a McCain administration—Treasury or Commerce, perhaps—or another run for president in 2012. But all agree he won’t be welcome in Massachusetts again.

“I can’t imagine he has a political future here after making Massachusetts a punch line in his campaign," said one UMass expert. More likely is a run for office in Romney’s home state of Utah, where he is immensely popular, not least because of his role in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. “Not getting the VP slot is not going to be a major setback,” a political scientist said.
