Ireland's Padraig Harrington yesterday became the first European since 1930 to win the US PGA Championship. Harrington bested Sergio Garcia in a tense duel at Oakland Hills with a par four on the 18th, matching Tiger Woods' 2006 achievement of winning major tournaments back-to-back, reports RTE.

Harrington seemed surprised by his victory on the heels of winning the British Open. "I was very confident in the Open," he said. "Here I hit some of the wildest golf shots ever hit on a golf course. In the end it was a lot of sheer willpower."
