Ally Kiyomura's contractions were four minutes apart when husband Jeffrey began driving her to a California hospital for the birth of their baby girl. He was sure they had time to get there. Ally soon realized they did not. As KNBC reports, the baby was born in the carpool lane of Interstate 5 in Anaheim around 9:30pm Wednesday. "She told me to pull over because the baby's going to come out," says Jeffrey of Gardena, also father to a 3-year-old daughter. "I said, 'Nah, I could probably make it if I drive fast enough,' and she was like, 'No, the baby's coming out now.'" She was right. "I got out of the car and came out to the passenger side and all of a sudden the head was out and the baby was already here," Jeffrey says, per the Los Angeles Times.
In a 911 call, he's heard telling the dispatcher that the baby is breathing—a huge relief as the couple experienced a stillbirth last year. "Ally was just focused on making sure the baby was healthy," Jeffrey tells KNBC. "I think she was channeling all of her energy into the baby to make sure she stays with us." Orange County Fire Authority officials reported it was one of their easiest calls ever, per KNBC, as they only needed to do some checks, then move Ally and the baby into a waiting ambulance, which took them the rest of the way to UC Irvine Medical Center. "As of now, baby's happy and healthy," says OCFA Capt. Jorge Robledo. "I feel like this is all a dream," Jeffrey adds, per the Times. "I am so glad that everything turned out just right without any complications." (More childbirth stories.)
