(Updated with new information throughout.) A jarring story out of San Francisco: Nancy Pelosi's office says somebody broke into her home overnight and "violently" assaulted her husband, Paul, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The House speaker herself, who has been on the road stumping for Democrats, was not in San Francisco at the time, per the Washington Post. A statement from her office adds that Paul Pelosi, 82, was taken to the hospital but "is expected to make a full recovery."

No further details about the identity of the assailant or a possible motive were immediately released. A statement from the Capitol Police doesn't add much, saying mainly that the "overnight break-in" is under investigation. CNN, quoting a law enforcement source, reports that Paul Pelosi's assailant attacked him with a hammer. While Nancy Pelosi is under constant protection by a security detail, her husband does not receive such protection when he is not with her, per the Post.

While it remains unclear if politics played a role in the assault, Axios notes that it happened amid a rise of threats and security incidents involving members of Congress. And the Pelosis' home has been a target previously: KRON 4 notes that on Jan. 1, 2021, a few days before the Capitol riot, vandals painted graffiti on the couple's garage door and left a pig's head on the sidewalk. (Paul Pelosi was in the news earlier this year over a DUI arrest.)
