Police in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, say they found a horrific scene Monday evening after neighbors reported that an Amazon delivery van had been parked outside a home for several hours with its engine running. Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers says deputies found a man's body in the yard along with two aggressive dogs, a German Shepherd and an English Mastiff, KSHB reports. The sheriff says after the animals "approached them aggressively," the deputies fired on the dogs, injuring one of them. Childers says the dogs, whose owners were out of town, then retreated into the home. He says that when he arrived at the scene, he saw blood on a dog door and heard the dogs inside the residence, USA Today reports.

The sheriff says he entered the home and killed both dogs. "Due to the nature of some of the injuries to the driver, we can’t confirm if the dogs caused the the driver's death however we wanted to be safe," he says. Authorities haven't named the victim, who is believed to be around 50 years old. The sheriff says the incident is being investigated and the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. "We're deeply saddened by tonight’s tragic incident involving a member of our Amazon family and will be providing support to the team and the driver’s loved ones," an Amazon spokesperson said Monday night. "We are assisting law enforcement in their investigation." (In August, a postal worker in Florida was killed in a dog attack after her truck broke down.)
