Herschel Walker's campaign proudly touts the Senate hopeful's small town roots, Olympic accomplishments, and business credentials. It also used to say Walker graduated from the University of Georgia, which he was attending in 1981 when he won the Heisman. However, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution story following up on that last claim reportedly led to the campaign striking it from a website promoting his bid to unseat Democratic US Sen. Raphael Warnock after it revealed the claim wasn't true. According to the report, the false claim was also used in ads for Walker's book and at a campaign rally.

Per CNN, Walker is considered a frontrunner in the race and quickly responded to the report in a statement admitting he never completed college because "life and football got in the way." Walker went on to encourage other athletes to finish college. In spite of this setback, and another high profile hiccup involving a swastika of syringes, Walker's campaign continues to tower over the competition thanks in large part to endorsements from Donald Trump and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and a boat load of early cash. Walker is one of a slew of candidates who Trump has backed as he seeks to insert himself into critical races nationwide. (More Herschel Walker stories.)
