Troopers chased down a stolen Jeep being driven at speeds reaching 110mph over the weekend, the Nebraska State Patrol said. When they caught it, the patrol said, troopers found an 11-year-old boy at the wheel—and two 14-year-old passengers. The chase began after the patrol received a report just before 1am Saturday that a Jeep Gladiator was stolen in Lincoln and was bound for Omaha on Interstate 80, the Kansas City Star reports. A trooper soon spotted the Jeep there and tried to stop it.
The Jeep stopped briefly but took off again when the trooper tried to talk to the driver. The chase resumed, with a handgun being thrown out of the Jeep along the way. Another trooper picked up the gun, which also had been reported stolen. The Jeep's driver then stopped on his own and let troopers approach, this time without fleeing again. The chase lasted about three minutes, a report said, and no one was hurt. The troopers reported finding a second stolen handgun in the Jeep.
All three were taken into custody, with the 14-year-olds charged with suspicion of possession of a stolen firearm and taken to a youth detention center. The driver was cited on suspicion of theft by unlawful taking of over $5,000, possession of a stolen firearm, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, and obstruction, per the Omaha World-Herald, along with other traffic violations. But because Nebraska law prohibits putting anyone 12 or younger in detention, police said, he was turned over to his mom. (More weird crimes stories.)
