On Monday, Joe Biden picked up the endorsement of Bernie Sanders. On Tuesday, an even bigger one came his way. Barack Obama formally backed Biden's 2020 bid in a video. "These aren't normal times," said Obama in the opening of his 12-minute message. The coronavirus pandemic makes it crucial to have a leader "guided by knowledge," along with "honesty and humility, empathy and grace." Biden fits the bill, he said. "That's why I'm so proud to endorse Joe Biden for president of the United States." Some other lines from the video:

  • "Choosing Joe to be my vice president was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a close friend," Obama said. "And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now. He’s someone whose own life has taught him how to persevere; how to bounce back when you’ve been knocked down."

  • "Through all his trials, he’s never once forgotten the values or the moral fiber that his parents passed on to him, and that made him who he is," Obama said. "That’s what steels his faith—in God, in America, and in all of us."
  • He "has the character and the experience to guide us through one of our darkest times and heal us through a long recovery."
Obama largely stayed behind the scenes as the primary unfolded, and his endorsement should give Biden "a significant boost as he seeks to coalesce support in the Democratic Party," per the Washington Post. (More Barack Obama stories.)
