Could Biden and Sanders Team Up? Sanders Responds

While Joe Biden is riding high after Super Tuesday, he has yet to unite the Democratic Party, which is why Brian Klaas at the Washington Post is urging him to "announce his pick for vice president this week." So what are the chances that Biden will team up with his rival Bernie Sanders? After questioning Sanders' ability to draw in black voters, MSNBC's Rachel Maddow put that question to the senator in an interview aired Wednesday. "You mean two old white guys on the ticket?" responded Sanders. "Probably not. I think the American people don't want—one old white guy is probably one too many for some," he said, per the Week. "I think we need a little bit more diversity than that." That could be good news for Elizabeth Warren, depending on Sanders' performance in Michigan.

A candidate must secure a majority of delegates—1,991—to win the nomination. But Sanders—with 501, trailing Biden's 566—told Maddow that the candidate with a plurality of votes, not a majority, should be the winner come July. "If Biden walks into the convention, or at the end of the process, has more votes than me, he's the winner," he said, per Axios, noting a second ballot involving superdelegates, who could potentially give the nomination to the candidate with fewer votes, "would be a real, real disaster for the Democratic Party" since "people would say 'the person who won the most votes didn't get selected.'" This comes after the New York Times interviewed 93 superdelegates, finding huge opposition to nominating Sanders if he falls short of a majority. (More Election 2020 stories.)
