The Kremlin says Vladimir Putin closed out the year with a thank-you call to President Trump after a tip from the US helped Russia prevent a possible terror attack. Reuters reports by way of Russian media that two Russians who were allegedly plotting attacks on St. Petersburg during new year celebrations were detained on Friday. On Sunday, Putin conveyed his gratitude for the information "transmitted through the channels of US special services," per the Kremlin's readout of the call.

Politico reports that the White House has not put out a call statement. Russia's readout didn't elaborate on the tip but added that "several matters of mutual interest were discussed [by Trump and Putin]. An agreement was made to continue bilateral cooperation in the fight against terrorism." CNN reports Russia initiated the call, which was the first between the two leaders since July.
