Jeff Sessions confirmed Thursday that he is running to reclaim the Senate seat he held for 20 years—and while President Trump has called naming Sessions as attorney general the "biggest mistake" of his presidency, Sessions wants to let bygones be bygones. The Alabama Republican described himself as Trump's "strongest advocate" in a statement on his campaign website, reports NBC. "As everyone knows, President Trump and I have had our ups and downs. But here’s the important part: the president is doing great work for America," he said. When Trump "took on Washington, only one senator out of a hundred had the courage to stand with him: me. I was the first to support President Trump. I was his strongest advocate. I still am."

Sessions, who was strongly criticized and later fired by Trump after he recused himself from the Russia investigation, continued praising the president on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show Thursday night, Mediaite reports. He said he didn't see any case for impeachment and pointed out that he had neither criticized the president nor written a tell-all book since he was forced out of the administration a year ago. "I will tell you why. First, that would be dishonorable. I was there to serve his agenda, not mine," he said. "Second, the president is doing a great job. For America and Alabama, and he has my strong support." Trump, however, has warned Sessions through allies that he shouldn't run and analysts do not expect him to return the praise.
