A Halloween accident has left a family of three dead and a 20-year-old California man accused of driving drunk and killing them. CBS Los Angeles reports that Joseph Awaida, 30, his 32-year-old wife, Raihan Dakhil, and their 3-year-old son, Omar, were walking home from an aunt's house while trick-or-treating around 10pm Thursday in the Los Cerritos neighborhood of Long Beach when a 2002 Toyota Sequoia jumped the curb and slammed into them. A release from the Long Beach Police Department notes the driver "failed to negotiate a turn in the roadway, drove up onto the sidewalk, and struck the three pedestrians." All three family members were taken to a local hospital, where Awaida died shortly afterward from his injuries. Little Omar died on Saturday, while his mother died the following day.

"It's just tragic," a local homeowner whose cameras captured the crash tells the Long Beach Post. "This is a devastating loss," says the head of a nonprofit that the family volunteered for, adding that Awaida and Dakhil were "kind, compassionate, and loving parents." Awaida worked at his father's auto repair shop; Dakhil recently finished her master's in social work, her brother tells KTLA. Friends tell the Post it's the second time in five years the family has dealt with tragedy: Awaida's 13-year-old brother died during a 2014 camping trip when he fell from a trail; Awaida tried in vain to save him. Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as 20-year-old Carlo Navarro, who was detained by cops at the scene of the accident. He was booked into Long Beach City Jail on $100,000 bail and charged with driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter. He posted bond Friday night. (More drunk driving stories.)
