A woman who accused President Trump of sexually assaulting her in the 1990s is now accusing him of defamation in a new lawsuit. E. Jean Carroll, perhaps best known as an advice columnist, filed the lawsuit Monday, reports the Washington Post. Earlier this year, Carroll published a memoir in which she wrote that Trump raped her in the dressing room of a New York City department store. Trump then accused her of lying. “Decades ago, the now President of the United States raped me,” Carroll said in a statement, per Politico. “When I had the courage to speak out about the attack, he defamed my character, accused me of lying for personal gain, even insulted my appearance. No woman should have to face this.”

Trump himself has not responded to the development, but press chief Stephanie Grisham did on his behalf. “Let me get this straight," said Grisham. "Ms. Carroll is suing the President for defending himself against false allegations?" She added that "the story she used to try and sell her trash book never happened, period." To win the defamation case, Carroll will have to prove that Trump knowingly lied with his denial, in which he added that Carroll was "not my type." Her attorney, Roberta Kaplan, tells the Post: “I don’t know what type a woman needs to be for him to decide to sexually assault someone, but that kind of gratuitous insult about her appearance is the kind of the thing that juries and judges look to. It looks like malice.” (More E. Jean Carroll stories.)
