Not a fan of rural or suburban life, but not quite ready for the hustle and bustle of a major metropolis? A smaller-size city may be more your speed, and WalletHub looks at nearly 1,300 of them across the country to see which ones rank highest. The site looked at more than three dozen metrics in five main categories—affordability, quality of life, economic health, safety, and education and health—in cities with populations of at least 25,000, but no more than 100,000. The top choice proves Dorothy Gale was right after all, while Massachusetts claims three cities out of the top 10. Here, WalletHub's picks:

  1. Leawood, Kan.
  2. Brentwood, Tenn.
  3. Sammamish, Wash.
  4. Melrose, Mass.
  5. Carmel, Ind.
  6. Lexington, Mass.
  7. Milton, Mass.
  8. Brookfield, Wis.
  9. Fair Lawn, NJ
  10. Cedar Park, Texas
See what other cities made the list. (Looking to raise a family? These cities get high marks.)
