Netflix has scrubbed a difficult-to-watch suicide scene from 13 Reasons Why on the advice of mental health experts. The 3-minute scene from the season one finale, showing character Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) cutting her wrist with a razor blade and bleeding out in a bathtub, has been removed so that viewers only see her staring in the mirror before a cut to her parents' reaction, reports Variety. Showrunner Brian Yorkey says the scene was meant to show "the ugly, painful reality of suicide in such graphic detail … [to] make sure no one would ever wish to emulate it." "But as we ready to launch season three, we have heard concerns about the scene from Dr. Christine Moutier at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and others, and have agreed with Netflix to re-edit it."

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, American Association of Suicidology, the Trevor Project, and other organizations applauded the move, per CNN. "This positive change will ensure that 13 Reasons Why continues to encourage open conversation about mental health and suicide prevention—while also mitigating the risk for the most vulnerable teenage viewers," reads a joint statement. Yorkey agrees, adding "no one scene is more important than the life of the show, and its message that we must take better care of each other." Researchers urged Netflix to pull the show in 2017 as a spike in suicide-related searches followed its release. A study published this year also identified a disturbing jump in teen and tween suicides in the month after the show debuted. (More on that here.)
