Ohio has welcomed North America’s first—and the world's second—baby born from the transplanted uterus of a deceased donor. The healthy baby girl was born via caesarian section in June to a mother who became pregnant through in vitro fertilization about a year after receiving a transplant in late 2017. "We couldn't have asked for a better outcome," Dr. Uma Perni of the Cleveland Clinic says, per People. "Everything went wonderfully with the delivery; the mother and baby girl are doing great." The birth was part of the Cleveland Clinic's clinical trial on uterine transplantation. So far, three patients have undergone successful transplants of uteruses from deceased donors, with the two others awaiting IVF, and several more candidates lined up, reports HealthDay News.

"It's important to remember this is still research. The field of uterus transplantation is rapidly evolving, and it's exciting to see what the options may be for women in the future," says Perni. The trial aims to help the estimated one in 500 women of childbearing age who suffer from uterine factor infertility, meaning they're unable to get pregnant due to uterus abnormalities. "We aim to make these extraordinary events ordinary for the women who choose this option," says transplant surgeon Dr. Andreas Tzakis. A Brazilian woman first delivered a baby born from the uterus of a deceased donor in December 2017. There have also been more than a dozen births via transplanted uteruses from living donors since a Swedish woman delivered a healthy baby after a uterus transplant in 2014, per the AP.
