Hours after New Jersey mom Beronica Ruiz talked to her son's vice principal about the 12-year-old being subjected to racist taunts from other students at the school, one of those students allegedly beat Ruiz as she walked her son home from school. She was pushing her 1-year-old daughter in a stroller at the time; the boy allegedly first hit Ruiz's son, then turned on her when she tried to stop him, ultimately throwing her to the ground and leaving her unconscious. "This was a brutal hate crime, and it was committed by a 13-year-old," the family's attorney tells the Washington Post. "I don’t know what circumstances could give rise to a 13-year-old boy having such hate in his heart that he would commit this brutal attack and leave a woman essentially to die in front of her children without any remorse or any twinge of conscience."
Ruiz's son said the boy and others chanted "All Mexicans should go back behind the wall" at him and threatened him, and Ruiz and her husband met with the VP because they were upset they had not been informed about the bullying by the school even though their son told a teacher what was going on and that teacher informed a security guard and made sure the boy was safe. The family's lawyer says Ruiz's June 19 beating, which left her hospitalized for two days with facial fractures and a concussion, could have been avoided had the school handled the bullying correctly at the outset, and plans to file a lawsuit on the family's behalf. The 13-year-old suspect allegedly fled the scene, but was arrested and charged with assault Tuesday, NBC New York reports. However, Ruiz says when she brought her son back to the Gifted and Talented Academy in Passaic after the incident, the suspect was still attending classes and was only suspended after her husband contacted the mayor.
