Takeaways From Trump's 2020 Campaign Launch

President Trump officially launched his re-election campaign with a rally in Orlando on Tuesday night—and while the crowd of around 20,000 people at the Amway Center was fired up, analysts say he spent far more time on old grievances than on setting out goals for a second term or even discussing the strong economy. He denounced Hillary Clinton and the Mueller investigation as well as the "fake news media." A few blocks away from the arena, hundreds of protesters gathered with anti-Trump signs and the now-famous "Trump Baby" blimp.

• Still the outsider. Trump made it clear that he is still planning to run as a Washington outsider, despite being the incumbent president, the Hill reports. "The people trying to stop our movement are the same Washington insiders who spent their careers rigging the system so your losses will be their gains, you know that," he told the crowd.

• New slogan in the works? The rally was mostly a "Greatest Hits" one, but new material included complaints about Democrats "who refuse to concede an election," counting "imposing sanctions on Russia" as one of the administration's achievements, and signs that he is planning a new slogan, the Washington Post reports. He told the crowd that "Keep America Great" might replace "Make America Great Again," and asked them to cheer for their favorite.
• "Everything Trump wanted." The Orlando rally was everything the "optics-obsessed" president could have wanted, with thousands of "adoring supporters" in MAGA hats, Politico reports. There was a festival-like atmosphere outside the rally, and inside, supporters compared it to a rock concert even before he took the stage.
• He went easy on his rivals. Trump spoke of Democrats in general as unhinged radicals bent on turning America into a socialist country, but he didn't spend long talking about his rivals, apart from "Sleepy" Joe Biden, the New York Times reports. "Our political opponents look down with hatred on our values and with utter disdain for the people whose lives they want to run, divide the American people up," he said. "Our job is to allow (them) not to do that."

• A cure for cancer? One of the promises Trump did make for his second term was eradicating AIDS and curing diseases "including cancer and others." The remarks came hours after son Donald Trump Jr. mocked Joe Biden for having a similar goal on cancer, the AP reports.
• Response from Bernie Sanders. Sanders called for a transformation of America in a live rebuttal immediately after the rally, Vox reports. "To bring the American people together around an agenda that works for all of us, not just the wealthy on top," he said. "We have a president who is a racist, who is a sexist, who is a homophobe, a xenophobe, and he is a religious bigot. His strategy of re-election is to divide the American people up. Our job is to allow him not to do that."
• And from Joe Biden. Biden responded to the rally around an hour later. "Let’s be clear: President Trump inherited a growing economy from the Obama-Biden administration," he tweeted. "And now, he’s in the process of squandering it."
