A pig rescued from a slaughterhouse as a piglet ended up as pork products after all. An animal rescue activist in France looked after the animal for two years after it was saved when it was two months old. When the activist moved and no longer had space to keep the growing pig, she gave it to a neighbor who signed an "adoption contract" to look after it for the rest of its natural life, the Local reports. The pig's life ended early, however, when the neighbor entrusted it to her ex-husband, who called in a butcher friend to kill it with a shotgun. Prosecutors say police found more than 240 pounds of canned pork and paté at the neighbor's home in Vannes, northwest France.

The woman was prosecuted for breach of trust and complicity in slaughter under illegal conditions, Connexion reports. "The animal was too big to feed him, he had escaped several times from his pen. I had entrusted it to my ex-husband who called in a butcher to kill him with a shotgun," the woman told a court last week. The ex-husband, however, testified that he didn't know anything about an adoption contract and claimed his ex-wife had planned to eat the animal from the start. She was fined $500 and given a three-month suspended sentence. (This family's "perfect" pig thwarted a burglar.)
