S&P 500, Nasdaq edge up; Dow closes lower

Stocks finished mostly higher after another day of mixed trading, the AP reports. Chipmakers led a rally among technology stocks Thursday. Xilinx jumped 18.4% after reporting results that beat forecasts. PG&E surged 24.9% after investigators ruled that the utility was not at fault for a Northern California wildfire that killed 22 people in 2017. Spice maker McCormick plunged 10.5% after reporting a weak quarter. The S&P 500 index rose 3 points, or 0.1%, to 2,642. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 22 points, or 0.1%, to 24,553. The Nasdaq added 47 points, or 0.7%, to 7,073. (More stock market stories.)
