George Conway, husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, has been a force for pushback on President Trump—including defending the Robert Mueller probe, trolling Trump on Twitter, and co-writing a recent op-ed against Trump's proposal to end birthright citizenship—and Trump has mainly steered clear from commenting on the unusual situation. That changed this week, however, after Conway penned another op-ed with attorney Neal Katyal, this one appearing in the New York Times and blasting Trump's appointment of new Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker as "unconstitutional." Reporters asked Trump Friday what he thought of George Conway's latest piece, and Trump didn't hold back this time.
After first retorting, "Who?," Trump said, per the Hill: "You mean Mr. Kellyanne Conway? He's just trying to get publicity for himself." He then tried to redirect the line of questioning, per CNN, noting, "Why don't you do this, why don't you ask Kellyanne that question, all right? She might know him better than me. I really don't know the guy." Trump seemed especially cranky at another question thrown at him by CNN's Abby Phillip, who asked him if he wanted Whitaker to reign in Mueller. The president's response: "What a stupid question that is. What a stupid question. But I watch you a lot, you ask a lot of stupid questions." He walked away without answering her question.
