The North Dakota woman accused of murdering her 8-months-pregnant neighbor last year told the gruesome story Tuesday of what she says happened. Brooke Crews testified in court that she lied to her then-boyfriend William Hoehn about being pregnant, emailing him a fake pregnancy test and fake sonogram, and that in August 2017 he told her he didn't believe she was really pregnant and that she'd better "produce a baby." Crews said her relationship with Hoehn was rocky and violent, and that she came up with the pregnancy scheme after one of their breakups, to keep from losing him, the AP reports. She described pushing 22-year-old Savanna Greywind, whom she'd lured to her apartment, the Bismarck Tribune reports; Greywind hit her head on the bathroom sink and lost consciousness. Crews said she then cut the baby out of Greywind's body using a box cutter.

Crews, testifying in Hoehn's trial on conspiracy to commit murder charges, said she never "explicitly" told Hoehn she planned to kill Greywind and take her baby, and that Hoehn appeared surprised when he walked into the bathroom. She said he then got a rope, tightened it around Greywind's neck, and said, "If she wasn't dead before, she is now." She said authorities searched the apartment three times but didn't find her body or the baby, and that Hoehn ultimately disposed of the body. The baby was found days after Greywind was reported missing. The medical examiner who performed the autopsy testified Monday, asserting Greywind had no evidence of head injuries, but that he couldn't be sure whether it was blood loss or strangulation that killed her. Hoehn has admitted to helping Crews cover up the murder but says he had no advance knowledge of the plan. Crews pleaded guilty and is serving a life sentence. The baby survived and is being raised by family. (More murder stories.)
