Palo Alto police say they've caught a young burglar with a bizarre but modern tactic: He allegedly broke into a home late Saturday night, then woke up the couple residing there to ask for their WiFi password, reports KRON. He didn't get it, however. Police say the husband, in his 60s, ushered the teen out out of the house and called police, and officers soon arrested a suspect nearby. In a release, police say the unnamed teen entered the home by cutting through a window screen, then woke the couple while covering his face some kind of garment. Even stranger, police say it wasn't his first attempt to gain access to strangers' WiFi that night.
About an hour earlier, a woman in the neighborhood spotted the teen in her side yard, reports the Sacramento Bee. He motioned for her to come out and talk, and when she and another resident in the house confronted him, he asked for access to their WiFi because he had run out of data, police say. They declined, and he rode off on a bicycle. It was only the next day that they realized the bicycle was theirs. As a result, a charge of petty theft has been added to other charges of residential burglary, prowling, and providing false information to an officer. One ominous detail: The first couple reports that two kitchen knives are missing from their home. (More weird crimes stories.)
