McConnell: 'I’ve Got One Tough Wife'
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and wife Elaine Chao, secretary of transportation, make a surprise appearance at the 137th annual Fancy Farm Picnic at St. Jerome Catholic Church, Saturday, Aug. 5, 2017 in Graves County, Ky.   (Kat Russell/The Paducah Sun via AP)

Mitch McConnell says he told his wife to keep her head down in the face of immigration protesters, but was "proud" when she instead told them, "Why don't you just leave my husband alone?" Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao "ignored my advice and went right up to them and told them what she thought," the Senate majority leader told Fox News on Thursday, per Politico. "I loved it. It went viral on the internet, and I’ve got one tough wife."

He adds that though he's "a big believer in free speech," he also thinks "poor behavior is not a great way to convey your views, and I think getting in people’s faces in public places and trying to make them uncomfortable certainly is not a great way to sell your point of view." Meanwhile, Quartz has an interesting primer on Chao's own journey as a 8-year-old child who immigrated to the US. (Elizabeth Warren might beg to differ with McConnell's love of free speech.)
