Angela Merkel has called President Trump's decision to to disavow the only just agreed upon G-7 statement "a little depressing." Per the AP, the German chancellor found the contentious Group of Seven summit with the US president a "sobering" experience but said European leaders won't be "taken advantage of" on trade. She conceded in an interview on German public television that the meeting's outcome "wasn't a great thing." Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and the other leaders clashed with Trump over steel and aluminum tariffs as well as his decision to abandon a deal with Iran to limit its nuclear program. The group managed a common statement in which they agreed to disagree on some issues, only to have Trump disavow the document. "Taking it back by tweet was of course sobering and also a little depressing," she said.
According to Politico, Merkel's frustration appears to stem from what she sees as Trump's unwillingness to compromise. “Sometimes I get the impression that the US president believes that only one side wins and the other loses,” Merkel reportedly said. Merkel's comments come on the heels of similar sentiments from French leaders. Trump's decision to walk back his previous support of the statement of shared goals and priorities came after he complained that host country Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blindsided him with criticism of his tariff threats at a summit-ending news conference. Following the president's tweets Sunday, he tweeted anew Monday morning from Singapore, repeating his criticism of US trade policies with Canada and, this time, also calling out Germany.
