It looks like special counsel Robert Mueller wants to have a talk with Donald Trump about Russia. Per the Washington Post, Mueller raised the possibility of interviewing the president as part of his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election during a meeting in December with Trump's lawyers. According to a person close to the president, that interview could happen within the next couple of weeks. “This is moving faster than anyone really realizes,” the source said. Asked about the possibility, White House lawyer Ty Cobb released a statement saying the White House will not comment on communications with the Office of the Special Counsel, but that it is "continuing its full cooperation with the OSC in order to facilitate the earliest possible resolution.”

The question now becomes just how that interview will take place, or if it actually will. Trump's legal team is currently trying to determine whether Mueller wants to interview Trump himself, where the interview would take place, and what the duration and topics would be, NBC News reports. The team is also determining whether, in lieu of an actual interview, the president could submit written answers to the special prosecutor's questions or simply have the president sign an affidavit affirming his innocence. But that seems unlikely, some experts say. "Prosecutors want to see and hear folks in person," said Chuck Rosenberg, a former US attorney. "The odds of prosecutors agreeing to written responses are somewhere between infinitesimally small and zero." (More Robert Mueller stories.)
