Energy, raw-material companies saw gains

Stocks closed mixed Wednesday as energy and raw-material companies rose and smaller stocks slipped, the AP reports. Energy companies, which have missed out on the market's gains this year, rose. Concho Resources rose 4.5%. High-dividend stocks like utilities and telecommunications companies fell. CenturyLink lost 6%.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 4 points, or 0.2% 2,579. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 58 points, or 0.3%, to 23,435. The Nasdaq composite fell 11 points, or 0.2%, to 6,717.
