The median household income in the US climbed more between 2014 and 2016 than in any other two-year period on record. But that doesn't mean all Americans shared equally in the gains. Maryland residents enjoy a median household income that is almost twice that of people in Mississippi, per 24/7 Wall St. Here are the richest and poorest states based on typical income:

Richest:

  1. Maryland: $78,945
  2. Alaska: $76,440
  3. New Jersey: $76,126
  4. Massachusetts: $75,297
  5. Hawaii: $74,511
Poorest:
  1. Mississippi: $41,754
  2. West Virginia: $43,385
  3. Arkansas: $44,334
  4. Louisiana: $45,146
  5. Alabama: $46,257
