A Democratic lawmaker from California has announced an amendment intended to prevent taxpayer dollars flowing from the Secret Service to President Trump's companies. US Rep. Adam Schiff's proposed amendment to the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, part of a spending package to fund the government in 2018, would stop Secret Service funds being "used to purchase, rent, or otherwise acquire goods or services, including hotel rooms, office space, or golf carts" from entities owned by the president or his immediate relatives, the Hill reports.

"The immense honor and responsibility of serving as president of the United States should never be exploited for profit or personal gain," Schiff said in a statement, per USA Today. "That the Trump Organization is profiting off the Secret Service is an abuse of taxpayer money and an improper method of enrichment." As president, Trump has made frequent visits to his own properties, where the Secret Service has spent more than $60,000 on golf cart rental alone since the start of his presidency. (With 42 White House protectees, including 18 Trump family members, more than 1,000 Secret Service members have already maxed out on overtime for this year.)
