A video that went up on Lee Johnson Media's YouTube channel on Saturday is causing grief for the Louisiana congressman behind the footage. The Times-Picayune reports on Rep. Clay Higgin's perhaps ill-thought-out recording, a five-minute reel that he apparently thought would have more impact if he shot it inside one of Auschwitz's old gas chambers. Higgins, a Republican who serves on the House's Homeland Security Committee, rehashes in the video the war atrocities that took place in the Nazi concentration camp, noting "a great sense of dread comes over you in this place" and that "man's inhumanity to man can be quite shocking." But it's the topic he veers into next that seems to be earning him the most criticism: modern-day terrorism and how the US needs to protect itself in an ever-shrinking world.
"It's hard to walk away from the gas chambers and ovens without a very sober feeling of … unwavering commitment to make damn sure that the United States of America is protected from the evils of the world," he says. Per ABC News, Higgins also mentions the US military's need to be "invincible." Critics accuse Higgins of "posturing" and victim exploitation, with a pointed admonishment from the Auschwitz Memorial's Twitter account. "Everyone has the right to personal reflections," reads one tweet. "However, inside a former gas chamber, there should be mournful silence. It's not a stage." The account also posted a photo of an Auschwitz sign calling for silence in the chambers as a sign of respect. Higgins also made headlines after last month's terror attack in London when he said "the free world … all of Christendom … is at war with Islamic horror," Time notes. (More Louisiana stories.)
