Iraqis Seek Employment— In Prison

Iraq has a new growth industry: prisons. A post-surge increase in Iraqi prisoners has put guards in hot demand, and other employment is scarce. So former shopkeepers and farmers are flooding over the border to reach American training facilities in Jordan, where they learn skills like cell-searching and how to perform a choke hold.

The US has spent over $400 million on the Jordanian post. But this year's class may be the last: the Iraqi government is trying to move training back home. That would be a mistake, says one of the center's American instructors. "It's no secret that they can't train in Iraq." (More Iraq stories.)
