Industrial companies led US stocks modestly lower on Wall Street Wednesday, per the AP. General Electric, for example, fell 1%. Consumer goods makers bucked the downward trend and moved higher: PepsiCo gained 1.7%. Trading was generally subdued ahead of the Easter holiday weekend. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 8 points, or 0.4%, to 2,344. The Dow Jones industrial average lost 59 points, or 0.3%, to 20,591, and the Nasdaq composite declined 30 points, or 0.5%, to 5,836. Bond prices rose, while the yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 2.28%. US markets will be closed Friday for the Good Friday holiday. (Read more Dow Jones stories.)
