A young man in Milwaukee was beaten, urinated on, forced to eat cat litter, and dumped in a freezing alley to die the week before Christmas, all for the heinous crime of trying to steal a bong, police say. According to a criminal complaint, videos showing the brutal treatment of 20-year-old Delvin Mendoza-Chaparro were posted to the victim's own Snapchat account, the Washington Post reports. In one, a suspect identified as Devin Katzfey, 20, can be heard telling the badly injured man: "You hear me, that's what happens when you try to steal." Katzfey, his brother Branden, 19, and Sarah Zakzesky, 20, have been charged with first-degree homicide in Mendoza-Chaparro's Dec. 19 death.
Police say Zakzesky told investigators that after a night of marijuana smoking at her apartment, the Katzfey brothers accused Mendoza-Chaparro of trying to steal a bong and other items they said they found in his jacket, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. She said they attacked him when he was sleeping and he never had "a chance to raise his fists and fight man to man." According to court papers, Zakzesky said she told the brothers that the victim needed to go to a hospital but after driving around, the trio left the unconscious man in an alley instead. Police say Mendoza-Chaparro was found dead in 14-degree weather wearing only a sweatshirt and jeans that had been pulled down. All three suspects, including Devin Katzfey, who was captured after going on the run, are being held in the Milwaukee County jail. (More Milwaukee stories.)
