John Kerry was mulling a pick for vice president at this time 4 years ago, but Democratic hopefuls today refuse to name a running mate. Still, Politico’s Ben Smith has an early roundup of who could be Clinton’s and Obama’s first choices in the No. 2 slot.

Obama:

• Joe Biden: The Delaware senator boasts national security experience, but comes with a big mouth.
• Mike Bloomberg: New York’s Republican mayor would provide balance, but "creates the Archie Bunker nightmare ticket: African-American and Jew.”

Clinton:

• Ted Strickland: He governs Ohio, a key state, but lacks national security know-how.
• Barack Obama: The Illinois senator could entice black voters, but may remind them about nasty words he and Hillary have exchanged.
