Figuring out the "least affordable housing markets" in the US isn't just a matter of finding the highest prices. For its list, 24/7 Wall Street compared prices to an area's average income. By that standard, New York's Kings County—ie, Brooklyn—is priciest. The top 10:

  1. Kings County, NY: median home sale price, $710,000; average monthly wage, $3,575
  2. Santa Cruz County, Calif.: $650,000; $3,818
  3. Marin County, Calif.: $880,000; $5,555
  4. New York County, NY: $1.35 million; $12,060
  5. San Luis Obispo County, Calif.: $487,000; $3,558
  6. San Francisco County, Calif.: $1.15 million; $8,901
  7. Maui County, Hawaii: $482,533; $3,445
  8. Napa County, Calif.: $549,000; $4,147
  9. Queens County, NY: $498,500; $4,173
  10. Monterey County, Calif.: $465,000; $3,692
