A Cop's Heartfelt Lament: 5 Brilliant Stories of the Week
Lt. Tim McMillan.   (Facebook)

A police officer's viral post and some happy endings related to Hurricane Matthew were among the uplifting stories of the week:

  • Post by Cop About 'Terrified' Black Youth Goes Viral: Lt. Tim McMillan, a white cop in Georgia, pulled over a black teen for texting and driving, and later lamented in a Facebook post about how "terrified" the youth was to be pulled over by police. "I truly don't even care [whose] fault it is, " he wrote. "I just wish somebody would fix it." The heartfelt post went viral, though McMillan has had moments when he's regretted writing it.
  • Teen Athlete Rescues National Anthem: Marina Garcia was all ready to play for her Texas high school's volleyball team, but the game was held up when a recording of the national anthem ran into a technical glitch. That's when Garcia stepped up to the mic, and a viral moment was born.

  • Drone Photo Helps Save Man Trapped in Flood: A drone photo, a Twitter hashtag, and a concerned brother more than a thousand miles away all helped save a North Carolina veteran trapped in his home by Hurricane Matthew flooding. It was, as the drone operator says, a "one in a million" stroke of luck that the image he posted online was spotted by the trapped man's brother in Texas.
  • He Couldn't Reach Police, So He Called Papa John's: The far-flung family of Claire Olsen found a novel way to contact the 87-year-old after Hurricane Matthew knocked out her phone service in Florida. With police overwhelmed, grandson Eric Olsen called Papa John's and had a pizza delivered to her. Worked like a charm.
  • 'Baby Bun' Goes Home: Last year, a woman's emotional "bun in the oven" pregnancy surprise for her husband went viral. The journey Dana and Arkell Graves and their son, Kaleb "Baby Bun" Graves, have been on since then is a remarkable one that, finally, appears to have a happy ending. Kaleb was born 17 weeks premature and endured a host of health problems. This week, after nearly a year in intensive care, he got to go home—in style.
