Fifteen months after promising to release his tax returns, Donald Trump once again pushed back against making them public during an interview with the AP on Wednesday, CNN reports. "He said, 'One, the voters don't actually care about this, and two, there is no new information that would come out of the tax returns,'" an AP reporter says. According to the New York Times, Trump says he won't release any returns until after the end of a "very unfair" IRS audit. However, he says his returns dating back to 2009 are still under audit, making it unlikely he'll release anything before the election in November. He's also refusing to release any of his earlier returns that aren't being audited. The IRS says an audit wouldn't prohibit Trump from releasing his returns. In fact, Richard Nixon did exactly that.

Trump tells the AP "there's nothing to learn" from his tax returns. But the AP reports they could reveal how rich he actually is, how little he pays in taxes, his charitable donations, and more. Trump routinely claims to be "very, very rich" and that he pays "as little as possible" in taxes. During the AP interview, he claimed "nobody knows more about taxes than I do—maybe in the history of the world." Trump's enemies seized Wednesday's opportunity to hit him again on his tax returns. Mitt Romney tells the AP Trump could be hiding "inappropriate associations with foreign entities, criminal organizations, or other unsavory groups." "You've got to ask yourself, why doesn't he want to release them?" the Times quotes Hillary Clinton as saying. "We're going to find out." Trump would be the first presidential candidate since 1976 to not release his tax returns. (More Donald Trump stories.)
