Fla. Lawmakers Want Women to Get Pap Smears at Elementary Schools

If Florida's HB 1411—which passed the state legislature this month—is signed into law, Planned Parenthood will no longer be able to take Medicaid. So lawmakers have released a list of places women can go instead to get reproductive services including birth control, breast exams, STI screenings, and pap smears. It's a list Slate calls "laughable" because many of the "family planning services" listed are places like K-12 schools, dental offices, and at least one optometry office.

"I don’t understand how they put this list together," one woman tells the Guardian. "A dental office, a Salvation Army, an elementary school—I can’t go and get care at those places...I don’t think an elementary school can prescribe me birth control." Another state lawmaker who opposed the bill tells the newspaper, "Many of the providers on that list are in no position to provide women’s healthcare." (More Planned Parenthood stories.)
