After Early Rally, Dow Ends Day Down 5

Stocks ended mostly lower on Wall Street after a brief early rally faded away, the AP reports. Several companies lost ground Thursday after releasing disappointing earnings and outlooks. The Dow Jones industrial average gave up five points, less than 0.1%, to 16,995. It was up as much as 130 points earlier. The Nasdaq composite gave up 12 points, or 0.3%, to 4,662. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up less than a point to end at 1,989. (More Dow Jones stories.)
